The Hero with a Thousand Faces is Joseph Campbell's analysis of the Hero's Journey (Monomyth). It is but the latest incarnation (and modern name) of the story structure pattern that is representative of successful and effective stories.

This structural pattern has been known and utilised before Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces (since the first story; it is therefore not simply a Hollywood construct): Shakespeare used this pattern; stories before Joseph Campbell's time used this pattern (Casablanca, 1942; Red River, 1948).
